However, the practical challenges of managing a chronic condition (ME) led her in a different direction — into a career in Whitehall. Alongside her renewable energy policy work, she became an advocate for people living with long-term illness, writing published articles, appearing on Channel 4 and BBC2, and representing patients nationally. She also revised and republished a Victorian book about chronic illness.
In recognition of both her policy contribution and her work supporting the management of long-term illness in the workplace, she was honoured to receive an MBE in 2021. Since retirement, she has returned to her first love: the creative arts through making carefully researched documentary films. Her first film, The Lost Palace of Whitehall was followed by Second Fruits, exploring the life and reputation of the Revd Henry Austen. Her latest film, A Passion for Books examines the Revd George Austen, Tonbridge, and eighteenth-century Kent. |
